Why the Scale Has So Much Power Over Us

Why the Scale Has So Much Power Over Us

Will you be honest with me?

Have you ever stepped off the scale, not liked the number, and stepped back on — hoping it would be different?

Maybe if I shifted my weight. Maybe if I held my breath. What might change if I took my socks off?

I have. More times than I can count.

No matter how many times I tried to manipulate that number on the scale, it did not change. (Shocker!) And yet I needed it to be different because I was allowing it to dictate something much bigger than my weight.

I was allowing it to dictate my entire day.

My mood. My food choices. How I felt in my clothes. How I talked to myself before I even had my first cup of tea. Deeper than that — how I viewed myself as a person.

Somewhere along the way, I had decided there was nirvana waiting for me with a magic number. And anything other than that number, well... I think you know the rest of that story.

I had set myself up to fail before I ever stepped on the scale. On the rare days the planets aligned and the scale sang with the number I was trying to see, I had that doubting voice in my head, wondering how long it would last.

Sound familiar?

You're not alone. Research shows that 58% of Americans say their weight directly affects their daily mental health. More than half of us have handed a number that kind of power before breakfast.

Most people don't talk about this part — the scale simply isn't an accurate measurement tool. Hydration, digestion, stress, hormones, even the time of day — all of it shifts that number. It was never telling you the truth. We were just taught that it was.

The scale seduces you into believing that if you reach the magic goal number, you will finally feel great about yourself. So we keep chasing it. Getting on. Getting off. Getting back on.

I did this for decades. First thing in the morning, before food, before water, without clothes — doing everything I could to make the number smaller. And I allowed that number to rule my entire day.

Can you see how myopic that thinking is? It was never just about the scale. The scale was the symptom of something so much bigger — how we see ourselves, how we talk to ourselves, and the story we'd been telling ourselves for years.

Many of us willingly gave our scales a job they were never qualified for.

Something shifted for me when I started asking different questions. Not what does the scale say? but what is my body actually telling me?

That's a completely different conversation. And honestly? A much more interesting one.

Most of us have gotten really, really good at tuning our bodies out. Olympic-level good, actually. We've been so busy managing the number that we stopped hearing the information our body was trying to give us.

And your body? It has a LOT to say.

If you're ready to start a different conversation with your body, the Body Wisdom Journal is a great place to begin. It's where we trade the scale's job description for something a lot more interesting.
